Join us in Celebrating 100 Years of Herculaneum High School Spirit

 

High School Buildings

1. The original public school building (later the high school) was built as an eight room building in 1912.

2. In 1919, additional classrooms were added to the east of the original school building.

3. In 1924, a gymnasium and additional classrooms were added to the south side of the original school building.

4. In 1934, the Home Economics was opened to the north of the original school building.

5. In 1935, construction began on the stone bleachers and athletic field to the east of the original school building. The bleachers and athletic field were constructed under the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA).

6. 1n 1947, the school district added to large “day room” buildings from Jefferson Barracks to the school campus. One building was used as a cafeteria and the other building housed two apartments for faculty members.

7. On Christmas Day 1947, devastation struck the Herculaneum Public School building as a fire destroyed most of the 1912 building and the 1991 addition. The fire did not reach the 1924 gymnasium addition.

8.On October 8, 1949, the new Herculaneum High School building was dedicated in a ceremony held in the high school gymnasium.

9. Construction of a new elementary school building to the north of the new high school building in 1949. On September 30, 1950, all elementary age students were moved from the high school to the new elementary school. The kindergarten students remained in the basement of the new high school until a new kindergarten was built in 1954.

10. In 1951, the voters of the Herculaneum R-5 School District voted to construct a one-room building to serve as the new Douglass Elementary School for the district’s black students. The new elementary school opened on September 4, 1951.

11. On September, 6, 1955, integration of the Herculaneum High School began as six black students attended classes at the high school. Integration of the elementary school occurred on September 3, 1957.

12. In 1963, the old 1947 cafeteria was moved from its location in front of the high school and relocated in front of the Home Economics Cottage.

13. In the area vacated by the move of the cafeteria, a new building was constructed containing three business education classrooms, a gymnasium and locker rooms, an instrumental music room, a physical education area and a cafeteria. The new building opened to students in September 1964.

14. In 1976, a new building was constructed in front of the 1964 addition that housed two mathematic classrooms and three home economics classrooms.

15. In 1983, the 1976 building was expanded to include three science classrooms, an independent study area and a new vocal and instrumental music area. At the same time, the first floor of the 1912 building was extensively remodeled to provide space for the library, study hall and guidance offices.

16. In 1992, continued expansion and construction occurred with a new office complex, a cafeteria, and business classrooms were added. The 1992 addition was physically connected to the original 1912/1949 building. Major renovations were made to the 1964 building resulting in expanded locker room facilities and a weight training area.

17. In August 2002, two new additions – an auditorium/theater and an industrial arts building - were added to the high school campus.

18. During the summer of 2010, the Herculaneum High School building was demolished to make way for the new Herculaneum High School that opened in 2011.

 

SPORTS HISTORY

1923- Herculaneum High School’s first boy’s track team, John Rapp, Leslie Baker, Edward Murphy, George Knight, Victor Brennan, Ernest Keener and Harold Lupkey, trained under Coach Howard Bunch.  The team was unable to compete in any track meets.

1924 – Herculaneum High School’s new gymnasium was opened, and both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams participated.

1924 – Herculaneum High School’s boys’ track team under Coach Elmer Sutterfield participated in their first track meet in Crystal City and won the second place cup.

1924 – Herculaneum High School’s first girls’ track team, Lena Simpson, Mabel Maupin, Susie Crowe, Hannah Porter and Bessie Knight, won a third place cup in competition.

 

1926 – The Herculaneum High School’s mascot name, the Black Cats, was selected by a vote of the school’s student body.

 

1926 – The first Herculaneum High School pep squad, the Cat Meows, was organized.

 

1926 – Herculaneum High School’s girls’ basketball team, Vada Simpson, Nooks Dugan, Mary Tiley, Lena Simpson, Ona Dryden, Susie Crowe, Margaret Porter, Doris London and Bessie Knight, won the first place cup at the Lead Belt Tournament at Flat River Junior College.  The team was coached by Ora Robinson and Ruth Ridgeway.

 

1927 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ basketball team, Orville Barks, Leslie Baker, Thomas Huddleston, Manual “Fat” Rapp, Russell Herbert, Walter Govreau, Clarence Cartee and Jimmie Williams, won the first place cup at the Lead Belt Tournament in Flat River.  The team was coached by Coach Bass.

 

1929 – With no organized baseball at Herculaneum High School, Mr. Hare organized five baseball teams, the Alley Rats, Wharf Rats, Rinkey Dinks, Bad Boys and Alley Boys, to play for the championship of the school.

 

1929 – The Herculaneum Booster, the high school newspaper, called for the construction of an athletic field at the high school.

 

1930 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ basketball team, Beryl Scaggs, Lois Kasten, Ruth Scaggs, Mina Moyne, Kathryn Rapp, Helen Pashia, Dorothy Pashia, Norma Simpson, Velma Carrow, Isobelle Thomas, won the first of two consecutive Jefferson County championships.  The team was coached by Lyndon Rodgers.

 

1935 – The Works Progress Administration (WPA) began construction of the Herculaneum Athletic Field.

 

1936 – The Herculaneum Athletic Field was completed in time for the spring 1937 track and field season.

 

1937 – The Black Cat Tales, the school newspaper, reported that a tennis court south of the home economics was set to open.  The court construction was sponsored by the Recreational Committee of the Student Council.

 

1941 – Herculaneum High School’s volleyball team, Alice Gooch, Doris Goodwin, Ruth McClanahan, Elda Polette, Joyce Alford, Anna Mae Stewart, Bernice Williams, Erna Kraus, Rachel Irvin, Lillian Haefner, Anita Litton, Evelyn Barnett and Margaret Hampton, participated for the first time in a county volleyball tournament at Festus.  The team coached by Ora Robinson was selected from her physical education volleyball classes.

 

1942 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ basketball team, Gene Thomas, Bob Simpson, Everett Francis, Stanley Williams, Harold Scaggs, Robert “Duke” Smith, Howard Haefner, Dalton Thomas and “Doc” Hardin, won the school’s first Jefferson County championship. This was the first team in the county to win the championship without a loss.  The high school’s “B” team was also county champion.

 

1942 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ track team won the Jefferson County track championship.  The team was led by Gene Thomas, the county high point man.

 

1943 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ track team repeated as Jefferson County track champions. Gene Thomas was the high point man in the county.

 

1943 – Herculaneum High School adopted a new school fight song to replace the original one for which the music was lost.

 

1944 – Herculaneum High School boys’ track team placed second in the county and fourth in the state of Missouri.  Gene Thomas was again the high point man in the county.

 

1946 – The first Mineral Area Relays track meet hosted by Herculaneum High School took place on April 13.  The track meet would continue for the next 61 years in Herculaneum.

 

1946 – Herculaneum High School played its first football game in the history of the school.  The Black Cats defeated Festus 12-6 on October 4.  Both of the touchdowns were scored by Eugene Ritcher. The first football coach was Coach Bill Brewer.

 

1946 – Lights were added to the football stadium near end of the football season.


1948 – Programs for Herculaneum High School football games were sold for the first time.

 

1950 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ track team won the first of 22 conference titles.

 

1950 – Herculaneum High School boys’ track team won its first Mineral Area Relays championship.  The Douglass High School Trojans, the first black school to participate in the event, placed second.

 

1955 – Herculaneum High School fielded a high school baseball team for the first time and played a 17-game schedule.

 

1955 – Herculaneum, Crystal City, Festus, DeSoto, Flat River, Perryville, Farmington, Fredericktown and Ste. Genevieve high schools make up the Mineral Area Football Conference.

 

1955 – Herculaneum High School added junior varsity basketball to the athletic program.

 

1955 – Two concrete tennis courts were constructed to the east of the home economics cottage.  School publications reported that a tennis club and inter-school tournaments would be scheduled.

 

1956 – The Herculaneum High School volleyball team placed second in the Crystal City Polio Benefit Tournament.  Team members included Dixie Walker, Hanna Blunk, Freda McCain, Gloria Polette, Babe Fleischer, Barbara Hill, Delora Kohler, Delora Hodge, Barbara Boyer, Barbara Casey and Marjorie Heligtag.

1958 – The Herculaneum High School basketball team won its first conference title since 1944.  The team members included Glenn Usher, Kenneth Usher, Jerry Aubuchon, John Talley, Raymond Smith, Fred Gray, John Bailey, Barry Evens, Jerry Helms, Jules Porchey, Bob Smith and Ronnie Boyer.  The team was coached by Jerry Turner.

 

1959 – Herculaneum High School added junior varsity volleyball to the athletic department.  The team was coached by Irma Parker.

 

1960 – Herculaneum High School dropped baseball from the sports program.

 

1961 – The first electric scoreboard was installed at the Herculaneum High School football field.

 

1962 – Unseeded in the Class L Regional Tournament, the Herculaneum High School basketball team defeated Crystal City to win the regional tournament.

1962 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ track team won the first Girl’s Invitational Track Meet in Herculaneum.  Herculaneum’s Judy Wilson was the top individual scorer.

 

1962 – On September 8, the Victory Bell and school flag were dedicated during a school assembly.

 

1962 – On September 15, the Herculaneum Athletic Field was dedicated in memory of John W. Dugan.

 

1962 – The Herculaneum Blackcats football team won the first game of what became a 27-game consecutive streak without a loss.  The teams were coached by Bill Holmes.

 

1963 – The Herculaneum Blackcats defeated the Crystal City Hornets in the last seconds to win the Mineral Area Conference championship.  The Blackcats won the game 18-13 on a touchdown pass from Jim Jackson to Ron Coleman.  The game was played in Crystal City.

 

1964 – On February 28, in the last game played in the Herculaneum Gymnasium, the Herculaneum Blackcats defeated the Crystal City Hornets 68-65 to win the conference title.  Bruce Thomas scored at the buzzer to tie the game at 61-61 and then scored all seven points in overtime.  The team was coached by Gene Myers.

 

1964 – Bruce Thomas became the first Herculaneum Blackcat to be selected to the Missouri Class L All-State team as a junior.

 

1964 – The Herculaneum Blackcats defeated the Farmington Knights 20-6 to tie Crystal City for the Mineral Area Football Conference championship.  The co-champions played a 0-0 tie in their conference match-up.

 

1964 – The Herculaneum Blackcats defeated the St. Pius Lancers 19-12 to extend their undefeated record to 27 consecutive games.

 

1964 – The new gymnasium was dedicated and named in honor of Ora E. Robinson, a longtime educator and girl’s coach in Herculaneum.

 

1964 – The new Herculaneum High School Gymnasium opened on December 8.  The Blackcats defeated the St. Pius Lancers 69-43 in the first basketball game played in the new gymnasium.

 

1965 – The Herculaneum Blackcats won the conference basketball title for the second year in a row.  The team coached by Gene Myers, featured All-State Bruce Thomas, All-State Mike Brady, Raymond Politte, Mike Evens, Stan Helms and Dale Riebold.

 

1965 – Bruce Thomas and Mike Brady were named to the first team Missouri Class L All-State team.

 

1965 – Herculaneum High School retired the #44 basketball uniform worn by All-State athlete, Bruce Thomas.

 

1965 – The Fredericktown Blackcats defeated the Herculaneum Blackcats 13-12 to end Herculaneum’s 27-game consecutive streak without a loss.  Herculaneum lost the next conference game to Crystal City before winning the next game.

1965 – Delray “Lucky” Shultz became the first Herculaneum High School football player to be named to the All-State team.

 

1967 – Larry Berneking was selected as the first St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete from Herculaneum.

 

1968 – Herculaneum High School added a girls’ gymnastic team to the athletic department.  The team was coached by Owen Worstell.

 

1970 – The Herculaneum Blackcats basketball team won the Jefferson County Conference title, the Class L Regional and their first round game of the Missouri State Class L championship.  The team was coached by Bill Stotler.  Key players included Gerald Horton, Rick Hollett, Art McCoy, Darrell Revelle, Steve Kline, Paul Richardson and Bob Fehlker.

 

1970 – Herculaneum High School fielded a baseball team for the first time in ten years. The team was coached by Gene Myers.

 

1973 – Herculaneum High School added cross country to the athletic department.  The team was coached by Clark Wille.

 

1973 – Herculaneum High School added girls’ track to the athletic department.

 

1975 – The boys’ gymnastics team is dropped from the high school athletic department.

 

1976 – James Freeman was the first Herculaneum High School athlete to be a state champion in boys’ track (shot put).

 

1977 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ cross country team won the first of seven consecutive 1A-3A state titles (1977-1983).  The teams were coached by Clark Wille.

 

1977 – Herculaneum High School added girls’ basketball to its athletic program.  The team was coached by Mike Reed.

 

1978 – Brian Stotler became the first Herculaneum High School athlete to be a state champion in boys’ cross country.

 

1979 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ track team won the school’s first state track title.  The team was coached by Clark Wille and Lon Franklin.

 

1979 – Susan Guidicy became the first Herculaneum High School athlete to be a state champion in girls’ track (high jump).  She would receive the honor again in 1980.

 

1981 – The girls’ gymnastics team is dropped from the high school athletic program.

 

1982 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ cross country team won the first of four consecutive state titles (1982-1985).  The 1982 and 1983 teams were coached by Lon Franklin.  The 1984 and 1985 teams were coached by “Bud” McMillin.

 

1983 – Lesley Dugan became the first Herculaneum athlete to be a state champion in girls’ cross country.  She would receive the honor again in 1985.

 

1983 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ track team won the state title.  The team was coached by Johanna Ravetta.

 

1984/85 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ basketball team went undefeated in the regular season.  The season came to an end during sectional play when the Blackcats were defeated by the McKinley Gold Bugs.  The team was coached by Bill Whitmer and featured players that included Dale Dunn, Mike Draper, Nick Loeffelman, Darren Stotler and Mark Reich.

 

1986 – The Herculaneum High School baseball team won the state high school championship.  The team was coached by Rick Hart.  Key players on the championship team included Matt Brewer, Mike Crawford, Tim Wells, Dale Dunn and Bryan Waites.

 

1987 – Herculaneum High School retired the #22 volleyball uniform worn by volleyball standout Tisha Lee Delaney.  Delaney playing for the University of Nebraska was selected First Team All Big-Eight in 1985 and First Team – All Big Eight and College Volleyball Coaches Association Division I All-American in 1986.

 

1987 – The Herculaneum High School football team made its first appearance in the Missouri state playoffs.  The team was coached by Stan Helms.

 

1991 – The Herculaneum High School football team was runner-up in the Class 3-A title game in Springfield.  The team, coached by Stan Helms, lost to Chillicothe in the state title game.  Key players included Jason Ramsey, Mark Wynn, Scott Croom, Shad DeBoor and Chris Glaze.

 

1992 – Herculaneum High School added varsity golf to the athletic program.  The team was coached by Rolla Herbert.

 

1995 – The Herculaneum High School football team was again the runner-up in the Class 3-A state title game at Springfield.  The team, coached by Stan Helms, lost to Seneca in the title game.  Key players included Dennis Gross, Nubby Eberhardt, Jon Lewis, J.J. Johnson, Ricky Huskey and Ben Grady.

 

1994-1995 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ basketball team was a state quarter-finalist, one game away from the final four.  Their season ended against New Madrid County Central.  The team was coached by Lon Franklin.  The key player was Katie Gielow.

 

1995 – Herculaneum High School added girls’ softball to the athletic program.  The team was coached by Lesa Cruzado.

 

1996 – The Herculaneum High School baseball team was runner-up in the state championship game.  The team, coached by Ron Rhodes, lost to Kirksville.  Key players included Dennis Gross, Jeremy Partney, Tyler Bates, Jon Lewis and Jason Shy.

 

1996 – Herculaneum High School added junior varsity girls’ softball to the athletic program.  The team was coached by Lesa Cruzado and Bridgett Roth.

 

1996 – Herculaneum High School added wrestling to the athletic program.  The team was coached by Mark Sobol.

 

1999 – The Herculaneum High School baseball team won its second state baseball championship.  The team was coached by Andy Runzi, who was freshman on the 1986 state championship team.  Key players were Cory Limpert, Mike Kinder, Brandon Jett, Mike Menkhus, Chris Grandstaff, Dave Emmons, Josh Thomas and Robert Mitchell.

 

2001 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ cross country team won the state championship for the fifth time.  The team was coached by Jim Kasten.

 

2002 – Jim Kasten was named Missouri Cross Country Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Coaches and Regional Coach of the Year.

 

2002 – Ryun Kasten was named Coach of the Year by the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.  He received the award again in 2003.

 

2003 – The Herculaneum High School boys’ cross country team won the state championship for the eighth time.  The team was coached by Ryun Kasten.

 

2006 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ cross country team won their sixth state championship.  The team was coached by Jim Kasten.

 

2006 – Jim Kasten was named Missouri Cross Country Coach of the Year by the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association.

 

2007 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ cross country team won their second consecutive state title and seventh overall.  The boys’ cross country team won the state title and their ninth overall.  Both teams were coached by Ryun Kasten.

 

2007 – Ryun Kasten was named Missouri Cross Country Coach of the Year by the Missouri Track and Cross Country Coaches Association for both boys’ and girls’ cross country.  He received the same awards in 2008.

 

2008 – The Herculaneum High School girls’ cross country team won their third consecutive state title and eighth overall.  The boys’ cross country team won their second consecutive state title and tenth overall.  Both teams were coached by Ryun Kasten.

 

2008 – Ryun Kasten was named the Missouri Cross Country Coach of the Year and Region 5 Coach of the Year by the National Federation of High School Coaches.
